Similar to Tom Wait's starring role as hard-luck DJ in Jim Jarmusch's Down By Law, Johansson's decision to make an album of Waits songs is a can't-lose proposition, a left-field creative exercise that's insulated from criticism because it's so free of vanity and opportunism.
Frankly, we're pretty impressed by Scarlett Johansson's first real foray into music, Anywhere I Lay My Head, a collection of Tom Waits songs. After time-consuming attempts at finding a producer to help nail the sound she'd imagined, Johansson met her match in Dave Sitek, guitarist for TV on the Radio.

The idea of sexy young starlet tackling the “Cookie Monster from Hell” caterwauls of Waits' idiosyncratic catalog already has two strikes against it. However, inspired production from TV on the Radio's David Sitek and Johansson's smoky alto ensure Waits' essence isn't “lost in translation.” .

The music of Tom Waits has always been about capturing those little things that make us uniquely, if not tragically, human -- all those frailties and conveying them through simple artistic gestures. So, while normally one shudders when another actress desultorily christens herself a singer, Ms. Johansson's decision to record a collection of Waits' songs was rife with possibility from its inception.

So given this A-lister's tony image, it came as a bit of a surprise that her debut disc would be a collection of obscurities by the ever-rumpled Tom Waits (plus one original).
